Is iOS Phishing Risk Higher Than Android
A recent report from Lookout, a prominent cloud security company based in Boston, has revealed that iOS devices are more susceptible to iOS phishing and web-based threats than their Android counterparts. This study, which scrutinized data from the third quarter of 2024, sheds light on key mobile security trends and highlights an urgent need for improved defenses against rising cyber threats.
Surge in iOS Phishing and Mobile Threats
Lookout’s Threat Lab has recorded a 17% increase in enterprise-targeted credential theft and iOS phishing attempts compared to the previous quarter. Alongside this, there has been a notable 32% uptick in the identification of malicious applications. One of the most concerning findings from the study is the heightened vulnerability of iOS devices to phishing schemes and web content threats. In the first three quarters of 2024, 19% of enterprise iOS devices encountered at least one phishing attack, whereas only 10.9% of Android devices faced similar threats.
This alarming disparity highlights the evolving mobile threat landscape and emphasizes the growing sophistication of cybercriminal tactics. Mobile devices are increasingly being targeted in the initial phases of cyberattacks, underlining the importance of proactive security measures.
Advanced Threats from Surveillanceware
In addition to iOS phishing concerns, Lookout’s researchers have detected two new families of mobile surveillanceware linked to advanced persistent threat (APT) groups operating from China and Russia.
