Spoiler Alert
This article contains significant spoilers for The Boys Season 4 finale and the comic book series.
The Boys Comics – Butcher’s Fate
In the comics, the narrative escalates as Homelander launches a coup, taking over the White House. With an army of supes at his command, Homelander murders the President and installs himself in power. Billy Butcher, armed with his iconic crowbar and backed by the U.S. military, storms the White House. The military has developed advanced weapons designed to kill supes, setting the stage for a climactic battle.
Butcher’s plan to directly confront Homelander, however, doesn’t unfold as anticipated. In a shocking twist, Black Noir – revealed as Homelander’s clone – intervenes and kills Homelander. Butcher then faces off against Black Noir, brutally finishing him off.
The final moments of the comics reveal that Butcher’s thirst for vengeance extends beyond Homelander and Black Noir. His relentless mission leads to a confrontation with Hughie, resulting in Butcher’s death.
Homelander’s Downfall
Homelander’s descent into madness is driven by mysterious images of himself committing horrific crimes he has no recollection of. Over time, he begins to believe he blacks out during these acts, but eventually starts committing them willingly.
During his coup, Homelander’s confrontation with Butcher in the Oval Office is interrupted by Black Noir. It is revealed that Black Noir was created to kill Homelander if he ever spiraled out of control. However, Black Noir, eager to eliminate Homelander, had been masquerading as him to commit unspeakable acts. This includes the assault on Butcher’s wife, leading to Homelander’s unraveling.
Enraged, Homelander attacks Black Noir, but the clone overpowers him. Black Noir kills Homelander and emerges holding his torn torso, only to be gunned down by the military. Butcher finishes the job by prying open Black Noir’s skull with his crowbar.
The Seven’s Fate in The Boys Comics
Following Homelander and Black Noir’s deaths, most of The Seven are wiped out. The only survivors are The Deep and Starlight, who vanish into hiding. Queen Maeve and A-Train meet their demise earlier in the series, with Homelander killing them during his rise to power.
The Boys’ Survival – Who Makes It Out Alive?
Among the original Boys, Hughie is the sole survivor. Butcher, driven by his obsession to eliminate all supes, acquires a lethal strain of Compound V. When Mother’s Milk, Kimiko, and Frenchie attempt to stop him, Butcher kills them as well.
Who Kills Butcher in The Boys Comics?
Hughie ultimately confronts Butcher at the top of the Empire State Building, resulting in a final battle that ends with Butcher’s death. Hughie’s decision to stop Butcher stems from the realization that Butcher’s campaign for vengeance has become indiscriminate and destructive.
The TV adaptation is gradually setting the stage for this ending. With Hughie’s emotional breaking point, especially after witnessing Victoria’s death, and Butcher’s increasing ruthlessness, it seems likely that the show will mirror the comics’ conclusion.
As we await Season 5, the anticipation for how The Boys will adapt these pivotal moments grows. Stay tuned for more updates on The Boys comics and TV series!
